Torrey Pines Falls Just Short vs. Top-ranked Mission Hills

The 5th ranked Torrey Pines Falcons gave a great effort on Friday night at Ed Burke Field, while hosting the top-ranked and undefeated Mission Hills Grizzlies. The Falcons went into the half with a 10-7 lead in a game that featured several lead changes. On 4th and 10 from the 12 yard line, quarterback Jason Heine scrambled around before finding Jack Nelson in the back of the end zone. Just over a minute remained, but the Falcons called timeout and decided to go for the two-point conversion and possibly the win, instead of tying the game up and playing for overtime. The snap was bobbled which led to Jason Heine being sacked. The Grizzlies recovered the ensuing onside kick and held on for a 24-23 win to remain unbeaten. Both teams will head into the week 11 with big rivalry games on the schedule. The Falcons will host La Costa Canyon (6-3) and the Grizzlies will return home to host San Marcos (8-1).

  1. Mission Hills 2017-2018 Overview
22-9 in 2016-17 Lost in 2nd round of State Div. 2 playoffs.
Mission Hills boys basketball returns Warren Washington as a first team all Avocado East selection, as well as a 2nd team all CIF performer. He is signing Wednesday with Oregon State. Chris Olave was a solid double digit scorer for the Grizzlies a year ago, and comes off the gridiron as one of the top players in the county in Football as well. 6 lettermen return in all, including: Tanner Stanich who heads a solid cast of role players, speedy Shawn Peters, Trevor Davis (4 year starter in baseball), and Jackson Israel (perhaps our most explosive 3 point threat).
Ours is one of the best leagues in the county, with Vista and San Marcos returning nearly everyone, and El Camino should be improved as well. It will be a fun challenge competing at that level every night. We need to be disciplined, defend with toughness, and shoot it well to be in the hunt for the league crown.
